First you need to choose what type of china you would like and whether or not you even want a fine china. There are two types of china - bone china and porcelain china.
-
Once you know what type of china you want, you can start selecting the pattern that suits you. Think of what colours you like and whether you want an ornate or a simple pattern. Also, consider what colours you have in your kitchen and dining area. Do you want your china to match your dining area or would you rather it was one of your favourite colours? Consider whether you want your china pattern to be classic and timeless or more modern and contemporary.
-
If you're not sure what colour you want choose white, off-white or glass. You can always add colour with accessories. Different shapes such as square or curvy designs can add variety.
-
When choosing your china pattern, you should remember that you are likely to keep your china for a very long time. Choose a pattern that you will still enjoy twenty or thirty years from now.
-
Before you register for that gorgeous pattern that you just have to have, stop. Imagine how that pattern will look with food on top of it. Be careful of choosing a pattern that will be off-putting when you're eating food. Plates are usually very nicely displayed…without food. So stop to imagine what it will look like first. Also, be aware that the pattern on the plate can detract from the presentation of the food, so if you like to display your food, choose a pattern with a plain centre.
-
Most china is actually very durable, though it looks delicate. It does however have special care procedures. Make sure you know how you would need to care for the china that you choose and decide whether or not you are willing to do that.
-
You should register for a minimum of 8 but preferably 12 table settings. Entertaining friends and family and children etc. will add to the number of settings required. It is best to register for more rather than less china.
-
Make sure that your place settings include a dinner plate, a side plate or/ and a bread and butter plate, a soup bowl and a cup and saucer. These basic items ensure that you will be able to serve anything and still entertain in style. You might want to consider including an extra set of dessert plates or bowls so that you don't have to move the party to the kitchen to wash plates in between courses.
-
Besides your place settings you should also register for china serveware to match your table settings. These items should include accent plates, platters, serving bowls, covered vegetable bowls, a butter dish, salt and pepper shakers, a covered sugar bowl, a creamer and a teapot.
